You open the freezer, reach for the ice bin, and it's empty. No cubes, no half-formed crescents, nothing. If your ice maker is not working in Orlando and you're sweating through another Florida afternoon without ice, that's a problem we hear about constantly. Between April and October, dead ice makers are one of our top call reasons. About half the time, though, the fix is something you can handle yourself in under ten minutes.

Below is what we check first when we walk into a kitchen with a non-producing ice maker, and what you can look at before picking up the phone.

Check the obvious stuff first

Before you start pulling the fridge away from the wall, rule out the simple things. The ice maker's on/off arm (that little wire bail on the side of the unit) gets bumped more often than you'd think. If it's in the raised position, the ice maker thinks the bin is full and won't cycle. Push it back down.

Then check your freezer temperature. Ice makers need the freezer at 0°F or just below to produce ice reliably. If your freezer is set to 10°F because someone adjusted it last week, that alone can stop production. A cheap thermometer will tell you where you stand.

While you're at it, look at the water supply valve behind the refrigerator. It should be fully open. We've seen homeowners accidentally bump the valve when sliding the fridge back after cleaning, and a partially closed valve will slow ice production to a crawl or kill it entirely.

Frozen water supply line

This is the single most common cause we see on service calls in the Orlando area. The small plastic or copper tube that feeds water to the ice maker can freeze solid, especially if the freezer temp dips too low or the line runs through a particularly cold section of the unit.

You can sometimes fix this yourself. Unplug the fridge, pull it out from the wall, and use a hair dryer on low heat along the water line where it connects to the back of the freezer. Give it five to ten minutes. If water starts dripping, you've found your problem. Plug back in and wait 24 hours for a full cycle.

If this keeps happening every few weeks, there's usually a problem with the door seal or the defrost system causing excess frost buildup. That's when a technician should take a look.

Clogged or old water filter

Refrigerator water filters are supposed to be replaced every six months. Most people forget. A clogged filter restricts water flow to the ice maker, and the unit either makes tiny, hollow cubes or stops producing altogether.

Central Florida's water is hard. Really hard. The mineral content in our tap water clogs filters faster than what you'd see up north. If you can't remember when you last changed yours, just swap it now. They run $15 to $40 depending on the brand. After replacing it, give the ice maker a full day to start producing normally again.

Faulty water inlet valve

The water inlet valve sits at the back of the refrigerator, down near the floor. It opens electrically to let water flow into the ice maker mold. When it fails, no water gets in and no ice gets made.

Mineral deposits build up inside the valve body and eventually restrict flow or prevent the solenoid from opening fully. We replace more inlet valves in Central Florida than anywhere else we've worked.

Testing one requires a multimeter to check for continuity and a way to measure water pressure at the line (you need at least 20 psi). If you're comfortable with basic electrical testing, you can diagnose this yourself. Otherwise, it's a quick repair for any appliance tech.

Bad ice maker assembly or module

Inside the ice maker assembly there's a small motor, a thermostat, and a heating element that warms the mold just enough to release the cubes. Any of those parts can fail on its own.

What most people don't realize is that replacing the entire module is often cheaper than repairing individual components inside it. For Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool units, we usually keep the common modules on the truck and can swap them out in under an hour. We quote a flat-rate price for the repair before we start so you can decide with the actual number in front of you.

If your ice maker hums or clicks but doesn't eject ice, or if it fills with water but the cubes never release, the assembly is the likely culprit.

Thermostat and sensor problems

The thermostat tells the ice maker when the mold has reached the right temperature to harvest cubes. When it fails, the unit either never starts a freeze cycle or never triggers the release. You get nothing either way.

Florida's humidity makes this worse. Moisture in the air enters the freezer every time you open the door, and over time it forms frost on sensors and thermostats. That frost buildup causes erratic behavior: the ice maker runs for a few days, stops for a week, then starts again on its own. If yours seems to work intermittently, frost on the thermostat or sensor is a strong bet.

Freezer temperature too warm

Sometimes the ice maker itself is fine, but the freezer can't hold the temperature needed to freeze water in the mold. Check out our guide on if your fridge is also leaking water. That points to a bigger refrigerator problem: a failing compressor, a refrigerant leak, a bad evaporator fan, or condenser coils caked with dust and pet hair.

If your frozen food is soft or your freezer feels warmer than usual, the ice maker stopping is just a symptom. You need to fix the cooling issue first before the ice maker will work again.

When to call a pro

If you've checked the water supply, confirmed the filter is fresh, verified the freezer is at 0°F, and the arm is in the right position, and you're still not getting ice after 24 hours, it's time to call for service.
