The evaporator fan motor is the number one cause

The evaporator fan lives behind a panel in the freezer. Its only job is to push cold air off the coils and up into the fridge. When the motor wears out or seizes, the freezer stays cold because it is right next to the coils, but no air reaches the fridge, so the fridge warms up. This is the single most common reason for a warm-fridge-cold-freezer split.

You can usually hear it. Open the freezer and find the door switch (the little button the door presses when it closes). Hold it in with your finger and listen. A healthy evaporator fan whirs softly. If you hear nothing, or a loud grinding or clicking, the fan motor is the likely problem. A replacement evaporator fan motor runs about $40 to $100 at retail, and getting to it means pulling the rear freezer panel.

Frosted evaporator coils mean the defrost system failed

The other big cause is ice. The evaporator coils naturally pick up frost as they run, so every fridge has a defrost system that melts it off a few times a day. When any one of them quits, frost keeps building until it becomes a solid block of ice over the coils. That ice blocks the airflow, and the fridge goes warm even though the fan is trying to run.

Here is how to spot it. Pull the back panel inside the freezer. If you see a thick wall of frost or solid ice packed over the coils instead of light, even frost, the defrost system has failed. To test the theory, unplug the fridge and let it sit open for 24 hours so the ice melts, then plug it back in. If the fridge cools fine for a day or two and then warms up again, the defrost system is confirmed. That is a pro fix because the parts are buried behind the coils.

Other things that cause a warm fridge

The fan and the defrost system cover most calls, but a few other parts cause the same symptom. Work through these before assuming the worst, because a couple are simple and free to rule out.

  • A stuck damper control. The damper is a small motorized door between the freezer and fridge that controls how much cold air passes through. If it sticks shut, the freezer stays cold and the fridge goes warm, the same as a dead fan. A stuck damper sometimes frees up on its own, but a failed one needs replacing.
  • Dirty condenser coils. This one is huge in Florida. The condenser coils underneath or behind the fridge dump heat, and when they pack with dust the fridge cannot cool properly and runs nonstop. In a dusty Orlando garage this happens fast. When both sections run warm or the fridge struggles in the heat, dirty coils are often why.
  • A failing condenser fan. This fan cools the condenser coils and compressor. If it stops, the fridge overheats and loses cooling, usually in both sections. Listen for it running near the compressor at the bottom rear.
  • A start relay or compressor problem. If the compressor will not start, nothing gets cold and both the fridge and freezer go warm together. So if your freezer is also warm, look here, not at the fan. A bad start relay is a cheaper fix than a compressor.

  1. Confirm the freezer is actually cold. Check that your freezer is still freezing food solid. If it is, you have the classic split and the cause is airflow or defrost. If the freezer is also warming up, the problem is the compressor, the start relay, or the condenser, which is a different path.
  2. Listen for the evaporator fan. Open the freezer, hold in the door switch, and listen for a soft whir. Silence or grinding points at the fan motor.
  3. Look for frost on the back freezer panel. A thick block of ice over the coils behind that panel means the defrost system failed. Light, even frost is normal.
  4. Vacuum the condenser coils. Dust packs onto the coils and the fridge cannot dump heat, so it runs constantly without cooling. In a Florida garage this happens fast. Pull the fridge out, vacuum the coils underneath or behind, and give it 24 hours.
  5. Check that the vents are not blocked. The vent between the freezer and fridge is easy to bury under a stack of frozen food or a tall grocery bag. Make sure air can actually move through the openings in both compartments.
