Your dryer turns on. The drum spins. You hear it running like normal. But forty minutes later you pull out a load of clothes that are just as wet as when you put them in. The dryer runs but produces zero heat. A dryer not heating is one of the most common service calls we get in Orlando, especially during humid summers when dryers are working overtime.
Here's the thing: a dryer that runs but won't heat isn't some mysterious electrical puzzle. In about 90% of cases, the cause falls into one of a handful of usual suspects. Some you can check yourself. Others need a technician. Let's walk through it.

The most common reasons your dryer isn't heating
After years of fixing dryers across Orlando, Winter Park, and Kissimmee, I can tell you the number one cause of a dryer not heating is a burned-out heating element. Electric dryers use a coil of resistance wire that glows red-hot to generate heat. Over time, that coil breaks. When it does, the drum keeps spinning but no heat gets produced.
The second most common cause is a blown thermal fuse. Every dryer has a small fuse on the exhaust duct or near the heating element that trips when the dryer overheats. Once it blows, it doesn't reset. The dryer will still run, but the heating circuit is broken. In Orlando, where lint builds up fast because we're running dryers so often in the humidity, blown thermal fuses are almost a weekly repair for us.
Gas dryers have their own set of issues. If you have a gas dryer that won't heat, the most likely culprit is a faulty igniter or gas valve solenoid. The igniter glows to light the gas, and the solenoids open the valve to let gas flow. Either one fails and you get no flame.
Other causes worth mentioning:
- A tripped circuit breaker. Electric dryers use two breakers (or a double-pole breaker). If one side trips, the motor runs but the heating element gets no power. Check your electrical panel before calling anyone.
- A defective cycling thermostat, which regulates the drum temperature. When it fails in the open position, the heater never kicks on.
- A broken timer or faulty control board, though this is less common than people think. I see homeowners replace expensive control boards when the real problem was a $12 thermal fuse.

What you can check before calling a repair tech

Start with the lint trap. Pull it out and clean it. Then look inside the lint trap housing with a flashlight. You'd be surprised how much lint collects down in there. A clogged lint path restricts airflow, which causes overheating, which blows the thermal fuse. This is the root cause of most dryer heating failures I see.
While you're at it, go outside and check your dryer vent exhaust. With the dryer running, you should feel strong airflow coming out of the exterior vent. If you feel weak airflow or nothing at all, your vent line is clogged. In Central Florida homes, I regularly pull out vent lines packed solid with lint. Some of them haven't been cleaned in years. Also worth checking: your circuit breaker panel. Find the dryer breaker and flip it fully off, then back on. If it trips again immediately, you have a wiring issue and should call an electrician, not an appliance tech.
If you have a gas dryer, make sure the gas supply valve behind the dryer is open. It's a small lever on the gas line. Parallel to the pipe means open. Perpendicular means closed. Someone might have turned it off and forgotten.
One more thing: if your dryer is plugged into an extension cord or power strip, stop doing that. Dryers pull serious amperage. They need a dedicated outlet. I've seen melted plugs and scorched outlets from people running dryers on inadequate wiring.
When it's time to call a professional
If you've cleaned the lint trap, verified the vent is clear, and checked your breaker, and the dryer still won't heat, it's time for a repair tech. At that point you're looking at a component failure that requires testing and replacement.
Here's what most repair shops won't tell you: diagnosing a dryer heating problem takes about 15 minutes with the right tools. A technician with a multimeter can test the heating element, thermal fuse, cycling thermostat, and high-limit thermostat without even pulling the dryer apart on some models. The actual repair usually takes under an hour.
What you don't want to do is start ordering parts based on YouTube videos and guessing. I can't count how many times I've walked into a home where the customer already bought a heating element, installed it themselves, and the dryer still won't heat because the real problem was a $8 thermal fuse. Or worse, they damaged the wiring harness during the install and now the repair costs twice as much.

Orlando's climate makes this worse
Living in Central Florida means your dryer works harder than dryers in drier climates. The humidity here means clothes go into the dryer wetter, so the machine has to extract more moisture per load. That translates to longer run times and more heat cycles, which wears out heating elements faster than you'd expect.
Summer thunderstorms also cause power surges that can damage dryer components. If your dryer stopped heating after a storm, a surge may have taken out the thermal fuse or control board. A good surge protector on your electrical panel can prevent this, but most Orlando homes don't have one.
We recommend cleaning your dryer vent line at least once a year. If you have a long vent run or use your dryer daily, twice a year. It's cheap insurance against thermal fuse failures and house fires.
