School started back up, the laundry pile doubled overnight, and your dryer picked this exact week to get slow. The load goes in, an hour later it comes out damp, and you run it again. Here is the thing most people get wrong about a slow dryer. They assume the heat is weak. Nine times out of ten the heat is fine, and the problem is airflow. The vent line is the number one suspect

The lint screen is dirtier than it looks
Cleaning the visible lint off the screen every load is the habit everyone knows. What fewer people know is that dryer sheets and fabric softener lay down an invisible film on the mesh that blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean. Run water over the screen. If it pools instead of flowing straight through, the screen is coated.
Wash it with warm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft brush, let it dry, and put it back. Do it every month or two if you use dryer sheets. It is a zero-dollar fix that solves more slow-dryer complaints than any part we carry on the truck.
A dirty moisture sensor lies to your dryer
Most dryers built in the last fifteen years end their automatic cycles based on moisture sensors, two thin metal bars just inside the drum opening. Clothes brush against them, the dryer reads how wet they are, and the cycle stops when the load reads dry.
That same dryer-sheet film coats the sensor bars. A coated sensor misreads, and it can fail in either direction: shutting off early and leaving loads damp, or running long past dry. If your dryer on an automatic cycle stops after twenty minutes with soaked clothes, or your timed cycles dry fine while sensor cycles do not, clean the bars with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Takes two minutes. If the behavior does not change, the sensor itself may be failing, which is a modest part at retail, usually $20 to $40.
Weak heat does exist, and it has a signature
Airflow explains most slow dryers, but not all of them. On an electric dryer, the heating element can partially fail, or the dryer can lose one leg of its 240-volt supply, and either way you get a drum that tumbles with lukewarm air. On gas, a weak igniter or a failing coil set makes the burner light late or drop out mid-cycle. A weak cycling thermostat can also cut the heat early, over and over, so the average temperature stays low.
The test is simple. Run the dryer empty on high for ten minutes, then open the door. It should be hot in there, not gently warm. Sometimes the washer is the real problem
A dryer can only do so much with clothes that come in dripping. If your washer's spin cycle is weak, every load starts the drying race soaked, and the dryer takes the blame. Grab a load straight out of the washer. If it is heavy and drips when you squeeze a shirt, the washer is not extracting properly, and the fix lives on that side of the laundry pair. A dryer dries by pulling in room air, heating it, and loading it with moisture. You cannot change the weather, but you can stop stacking handicaps. Keep the garage dryer's vent run short and clean, since it is fighting with less margin than the manual assumes. Skip the rainy-afternoon marathon sessions that let humidity pool in the garage. And if a garage dryer that used to keep up suddenly cannot, do not blame August first. The checks below still apply, because heat and humidity only slow a dryer down. They do not double its cycle count on their own.
Simple checks you can run before calling anyone
- Wash the lint screen. Not just the surface lint. Warm water, dish soap, soft brush, and confirm water flows straight through the mesh before it goes back in.
- Check the outside vent flap. Run the dryer and look at the exterior vent. You should feel strong, warm air and see the flap held open. A limp flap or weak breeze means the line is blocked.
- Look behind the dryer. A flexible transition duct crushed against the wall chokes airflow before it ever reaches the vent line. Straighten it, shorten it if it loops, and leave the dryer a few inches off the wall.
- Clean the moisture sensor bars. Rubbing alcohol on a cloth, right inside the drum opening. Then run a sensor cycle and see if the shutoff behavior changes.
- Run the empty heat test. High heat, ten minutes, empty drum. Hot means airflow problem. Lukewarm means heating problem. That one word saves a lot of guessing on the phone.
