You hit start, the microwave hums, the turntable spins, the timer counts down. You take your food out and it's the same temperature it was when you put it in. The microwave runs but doesn't heat. That's a specific failure mode that has a small list of possible causes. Some are repairable. Some make repair not worth it given how cheap microwaves are. The math here is different from any other appliance because microwave repair sits in an awkward zone where labor and parts often exceed the price of a brand-new unit.

Why a microwave runs but doesn't heat
A microwave generates heat with a single component: the magnetron. It's a high-voltage tube that converts electrical energy into the microwave radiation that actually cooks food. Around the magnetron sits a small ecosystem of components that supply it with the right voltage: the high-voltage transformer, the high-voltage capacitor, and the high-voltage diode. If any one of those fails, the microwave runs (the motor and lights work on lower voltage) but no microwaves get produced.
The most common single-cause failures, in order:
- Failed high-voltage diode. Cheap part, common failure. Often the first thing that goes.
- Failed magnetron. The magnetron itself has burned out. More expensive part.
- Failed high-voltage capacitor. Less common. Capacitors are also dangerous to handle (more on that below).
- Failed high-voltage transformer. Rare but happens. Expensive part.
- Door switch failure. The microwave thinks the door is open and refuses to start the magnetron, but the lights and turntable still work because they're on a different circuit.
- Stuck or burned thermal cutout fuse. A safety fuse that interrupts power to the magnetron if the microwave overheats. Easy to test, cheap to replace.

The microwave repair-vs-replace math
Here's where microwaves are weird. A new countertop microwave starts at around $100. A new over-the-range (OTR) microwave starts at around $250 and goes up to $600+ for high-end models. Repair labor on a microwave is the same as repair labor on any other appliance. And the parts can range from $20 (a diode) to $200+ (a magnetron).

For over-the-range microwaves, the math is different because:
- The unit is more expensive to start with
- Replacement requires removing the old one and installing the new one (real work, not just a swap on the counter)
- The new one needs to fit the existing cabinet space and venting setup
For an OTR microwave, repair often makes sense if the unit is under 5 years old and the failed part is on the lower end of the cost range. Past 7 years, replacement usually wins.
Built-in microwaves (drawer-style, built into a cabinet face) are a third category. These are expensive enough ($1,500+) that repair almost always makes sense regardless of age, until the unit is essentially totaled.
Why we don't recommend DIY microwave repair
This is the one repair across all major appliances where we genuinely think homeowners should not attempt it. The reason: the high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can store a lethal electrical charge for hours after the microwave is unplugged. If you open the cabinet and touch the wrong terminals, you can be killed. This is not a "you might get a shock" warning. There are documented fatalities from people opening microwaves without properly discharging the capacitor.
Even seasoned electricians who don't work on microwaves regularly should approach this carefully. The technique to safely discharge the capacitor (with a screwdriver or specialized tool) is taught in appliance-repair training because doing it wrong is fatal.
Diagnosis from the outside (testing the door switch with a multimeter, replacing a thermal fuse) is a defensible DIY effort. Check out our guide on DIY vs pro guide. Anything inside the metal cage that surrounds the high-voltage circuit is not.
Symptoms that point to specific causes
- Microwave runs, turntable spins, no heat at all. Diode, magnetron, or capacitor.
- Microwave runs but produces a loud humming or buzzing during operation. Failed magnetron is the most likely cause.
- Microwave starts, then immediately shuts off and beeps. Thermal fuse or door switch.
- Microwave doesn't start at all (no lights, no fan, no display). Power problem. Check the outlet, breaker, or main fuse. Different failure than "runs but doesn't heat."
- Lights and display work but pressing start does nothing. Door switch or control board.
- Microwave heats inconsistently. Works for a minute, stops working, then resumes. Magnetron is failing intermittently. End of life is near.
What microwave repairs typically cost

For microwaves specifically, the lower end of that range covers door switch and thermal fuse replacements. The middle covers diode or transformer replacements. The higher end is magnetron replacement, which is essentially the maximum useful repair on a microwave.
The real question isn't whether the repair is doable. It's whether the repair makes financial sense given microwave replacement options.
When the math says replace
- Any countertop microwave older than 3-4 years with any failure beyond a stuck door switch
- Over-the-range microwave older than 7 years with magnetron or transformer failure
- Any microwave that's been making a louder-than-usual hum for the past few months. The magnetron is on its way out and any other repair you do now will be pointless within a year
- Any microwave with sparks visible inside the cavity during operation (waveguide cover damage, often paired with magnetron damage)
- Microwave that's been used past its Florida-realistic lifespan of 6-9 years
When repair makes sense
- Over-the-range microwave under 5 years old with a failed door switch or thermal fuse (cheap parts, fast labor)
- Built-in / drawer-style microwave at almost any age that hasn't been repaired before
- Microwave with documented sentimental or aesthetic value (matching cabinet built-in, etc.)
- Newer over-the-range microwave with high-end ventilation features that would be expensive to replicate in a replacement
Common questions
Why is my microwave running but not heating my food?
The magnetron, diode, capacitor, or transformer has failed. These components supply the high voltage the magnetron needs to generate microwaves. The motor and lights work on lower voltage from a separate circuit, which is why the microwave still appears to run.
Is it worth repairing a microwave?
For countertop microwaves, almost never. They're cheaper to replace. For over-the-range and built-in microwaves, often yes if the unit is under 5-7 years old and the failed part is on the lower-cost end.
Can I fix a microwave myself?
