It is alarming the first time, and it should be. We get calls about this every week from Orlando kitchens. Most of the time the cause is something you put in there, not a broken microwave.

First thing: stop using it and unplug it. Do not run another cycle to see if it does it again. Those sparks are arcing, and arcing inside a microwave can burn the interior, char the waveguide cover, damage the magnetron, and in a bad case start a fire. Pull the plug, let it sit, and then work through the causes below from most common to least.

Metal inside the microwave is the usual culprit

Nine times out of ten, sparking comes from metal in the cavity. Aluminum foil, a forgotten fork or spoon, a twist tie, the metal handle on a takeout bag, or a plate with a gold or silver trim ring will all arc. Microwaves bounce off metal and concentrate at thin edges and points, which is what makes the spark. Take the food out, pull anything metal, and switch to a microwave-safe dish.

The sneaky ones catch people off guard. A china plate with a thin gold band you barely notice, the staple in a tea bag, the foil-lined liner inside a coffee cup sleeve, or a single strand from a steel scrubber left on a bowl. A burnt waveguide cover is the next thing to check

Look at the inside wall, usually the right side or the top. You will see a small thin panel, often tan or light brown, made of a material called mica. That is the waveguide cover, and it shields the opening where the microwaves enter the cavity. When grease and food splatter soak into it over the years, it scorches and starts arcing right at that spot. The cover is a cheap part, $10 to $20 retail, and it is one of the few inside repairs a handy person can do.

Here is how to tell it is the cover doing it. The sparks come from the same spot every time, right where that panel sits, and the panel itself looks burnt, black-flecked, or has a hole worked into it. If that is what you see, unplug the unit, find the model number on the back or inside the door frame, and order the matching cover. Most slide out after one small screw. Cut a replacement to size only if the new one does not match, and never run the microwave with the cover missing.

A damaged metal rack or rack support can arc

If your microwave came with a wire rack for cooking two levels at once, check it and the little metal clips or supports it sits on. When a rack is bent, chipped, or set in the wrong slots, or when a support comes loose, the bare metal arcs against the wall. Make sure the rack is seated correctly on its supports. If a coating has worn off or the rack is mangled, take it out and run the microwave without it.

Food splatter and grease can arc on the walls

Caked-on food and grease are not just ugly. Burnt-on splatter carbonizes over time, and carbon conducts, so a crusty spot on the ceiling or wall can start throwing sparks all on its own. Wipe the whole interior down with warm soapy water or a vinegar-water mix, get the ceiling and the corners, and pay attention to the area around the waveguide cover. A clean cavity solves more sparking calls than people expect.

Chipped interior paint exposing bare metal or rust

The inside of a microwave is painted metal. When that paint chips or bubbles, usually from old splatter or from arcing that already happened, it leaves bare metal or a spot of rust exposed. Bare metal arcs. For a small chip you can sand it lightly and touch it up with microwave-safe enamel paint made for appliance cavities. Use the cavity-rated paint, not regular spray paint, and give it a full cure time before you run the unit again.

A microwave needs something to absorb the energy it makes. Run it with nothing inside, or with a tiny amount of food, and that energy has nowhere to go, so it reflects back and can arc or stress the magnetron. If somebody started it empty, stop it, and going forward keep a microwave-safe cup of water in there if you tend to hit start by habit. This one is on the user, not the machine.

A failing diode or magnetron is a pro job

Here is the line where it stops being a DIY fix. If the cavity is empty and clean, there is no metal in there, the waveguide cover looks fine, and it still sparks, often with loud buzzing, the problem is likely the magnetron or the high-voltage diode. The magnetron is the tube that makes the microwaves, and when it starts to fail it can arc inside its own housing and throw sparks into the cavity. A bad diode can do the same. These are high-voltage parts, and the capacitor near them can hold a lethal charge for a long time after you unplug the unit. We do not recommend opening the cabinet. This is the one repair where touching the wrong terminal can kill you.

With these internal failures, the size of the microwave drives the decision. A countertop unit is usually cheaper to replace than to repair, since a new one runs $80 to $200. A built-in or over-the-range microwave is a different story. Those are expensive to buy and a real job to install, so repair usually makes sense if the unit is not too old. And keep this separate in your head from a microwave that runs but will not heat at all. That is a different failure with a different fix.
