An FPL outage flickers your power, the lights come back on, and now your microwave display is dark, your fridge is acting strange, or the dishwasher won't turn on at all. Power surge damage to appliances is one of the most common service categories we see in the Orlando area from May through October. Florida's storm season. And most homeowners don't realize the surge happened when the power came back on, not when it went out. Some of what gets damaged is fixable. Some isn't. Here's how to tell.

Why power surges hit Florida appliances harder
Power surges aren't the spike from lightning hitting your house. Check out our guide on humidity damage to appliances. Those are rare. The damaging surges happen when power restoration after an outage sends a sudden voltage swing through the grid as it stabilizes. FPL's transmission infrastructure is solid, but every neighborhood-level outage in Central Florida creates the conditions for a small surge when the lights come back on.
Typical Orlando-area outage frequency runs to multiple events per summer for most ZIP codes, with bigger events from named storms. The appliances most vulnerable to surge damage are anything with an electronic control board: ovens with digital displays, dishwashers with touch panels, microwaves, washers with electronic controls, and modern smart fridges. Symptoms of surge damage by appliance
Sometimes the appliance is obviously dead. Won't turn on, no display, nothing. More often the symptoms are subtle and weird, and the homeowner doesn't connect them to the storm three days ago.
- Refrigerators: Compressor cycles erratically, freezer not freezing, water/ice dispenser dead, control panel showing wrong temperatures, intermittent shutdowns.
- Ovens / ranges: Display flickers or shows wrong characters, won't preheat, cooks unevenly, error codes that won't clear, oven won't turn off when you press cancel.
- Microwaves: Display dead but timer works, runs but doesn't heat, sparks during normal use, won't open the door.
- Dishwashers: Won't start a cycle, starts but quits halfway, leak detection triggering when there's no leak, lights flashing in unfamiliar patterns.
- Washing machines: Won't advance through cycles, won't accept commands, fills and stops, stuck in spin cycle.
- Dryers: Display issues, won't heat (electronic models), shuts off mid-cycle, won't accept program changes.
What's fixable, what's totaled
The honest split looks like this:
Fixable (most of the time)
- Failed control boards. If the board is the only damaged component, swapping it usually restores the appliance. The diagnosis is straightforward. Voltage tests at the right pins.
- Failed user interface or touchpad assemblies. Same logic as boards. A separate replaceable part for many models.
- Blown fuses inside the appliance. Many appliances have an internal thermal or surge fuse specifically designed to take the hit and protect the board. If that fuse blew but the board survived, the fix is cheap.
- Damaged display assemblies. If the display is dead but the rest of the appliance functions, replacing the display alone is often enough.
Sometimes fixable, depends on extent
- Refrigerators with surge-damaged compressors. A compressor replacement is one of the priciest refrigerator repairs. On units under 5 years old it can still make sense; on units over 10 years old, the math usually points to replacement.
- Multiple-component damage. If the surge took out the control board AND the compressor AND the user interface, the cost of repair starts approaching the price of a new appliance. The math has to be evaluated on the specific quote.
Usually not fixable
- Surge damage that hits the motor windings. If the actual motor coils were damaged, a motor replacement is rarely worth doing on most consumer-grade appliances.
- Internal wiring harness damage. If the surge actually melted internal wiring (rare but it happens with severe events), the labor to replace the harness usually exceeds the value of the appliance.
- Damaged sealed refrigeration systems. If the surge somehow caused a refrigerant leak (typically through compressor damage), sealed-system repair on older units doesn't pencil out.
Repair costs after surge damage
Yale Appliance's 2025 service data puts the typical control board replacement at the upper end of category averages. Refrigeration repairs average $255 (range $150-$900+), cooking averages $214 (range $180-$600+). Surge-related board replacements usually fall in those ranges. Multi-component surge damage ranges higher.
If you're trying to decide whether to repair, the rule of thumb still applies: if the repair costs more than 50% of a comparable new appliance and the unit is past 75% of its expected lifespan, replace it.
What about your homeowners insurance?
This is where surge damage gets interesting. Homeowners insurance often covers sudden, accidental damage from a power surge as a "covered peril." Mechanical breakdown isn't covered, but a documented power surge that fried your appliance might be. Whether your specific policy covers it depends on the wording. Worth checking: does your policy cover "power surge from utility company action" as a covered peril? If yes and the repair exceeds your deductible, file the claim. If the deductible is $1,000 and the repair is $400, just pay for the repair.
How to prevent the next one
- Install a whole-house surge protector at the breaker panel. $200-$400 installed by an electrician. Sits at the panel and clamps surges before they reach any appliance. After one Florida storm season, it usually pays for itself.
- Use surge-protector outlets or strips for individual appliances. Not as effective as the whole-house version but better than nothing for the most expensive appliances (oven, microwave, smart fridge).
- Unplug major appliances before a known incoming storm. Especially anything with a digital display.
- Don't plug expensive appliances into standard power strips. A $15 surge strip is not enough protection for a $400 oven control board.
What to do after a surge event
If you've just had a power outage and you're worried about damage:
- Wait 5 minutes after power is restored. Let the grid stabilize before turning anything on.
- Bring appliances back online one at a time, with 5-10 minutes between each. Avoids overloading circuits and reduces the chance of multiple failures from a single follow-on surge.
- Watch each appliance during its first cycle. Listen for unusual sounds, watch for flickering displays, check temperatures.
- If something's wrong, stop using it immediately. Continued operation of a surge-damaged appliance can cascade the damage to other components.
- Document everything. Take photos of error displays, note the date and approximate time of the outage, and save your repair invoice if you decide to file an insurance claim.
Common questions
How can I tell if my appliance was damaged by a power surge?
Symptoms appear right after a power event and didn't exist before. Display issues, error codes, intermittent operation, or complete failure that didn't precede the outage. If symptoms appeared before the storm, it's probably not surge damage.
Will my homeowners insurance cover surge damage to my appliances?
Often yes, if your policy covers "power surge" as a covered peril. Check your specific policy. Compare the repair cost to your deductible before filing. Sometimes paying out of pocket is cheaper than the claim.
Are surge protector power strips enough to protect my appliances?
For small electronics, sure. For major appliances with control boards (ovens, dishwashers, washers, smart fridges), no. Those need a whole-house surge protector at the breaker panel for real protection.
Can I repair surge damage myself?
Replacing a control board is doable for the experienced DIYer, but identifying which component took the damage requires a multimeter and knowledge of the schematic. Most surge-damage repairs go better with a tech who's seen the patterns before.
